"What's the Point?"

A few days ago, when Brendan was still hurting a lot, he asked me, "What's the point?  What's the point of just lying on the couch and eating pizza all day?"

Well, that was a good question.  It seems like a pretty good waste of time if you put it that way.  And who wants to live life that way anyway?   Then, I reminded Brendan of his baby blessing, his patriarchal blessing, and the blessing he was given last week when he was ordained to the priesthood.  All made specific reference to the fact that Brendan would be upon this earth until his mission here was finished.  (I think that about sums it up for all of us, right?)

"Well," I told Brendan, "I guess you better pray and figure out each day what it is Heavenly Father wants you to do."

It's a good reminder for me.  We all have specific things we need to do -- maybe it's help others,  or learn and experience new things, or possibly overcome a struggle or challenge -- and I guess, like Christ, we'd better "be about [our] Father's business." (Luke 2:49)  Sometimes, like Brendan, we just have to figure out what it is he wants us to do.  In some cases, maybe it's just endure faithfully to the end.  Each day, as we ask and then listen, we'll know what we need to do.

Today, Sheldon and Angie and their family came with crepes for breakfast (since they knew Brendan likes crepes!)

They also brought Zoe to visit!
It wasn't long after breakfast when Brendan wanted more pears to eat.  He says, "Pears must be the fruit from the tree of life."  He can't imagine anything that could possibly taste better!
It's good to see Brendan up and walking around again.  The radiation to his shins really seems to be helping.
Brendan spent the night with Chris and Kristen.  He has wanted to have a sleep over for a very long time.  Well, they finally made it happen, and Brendan loved every minute!
Today we were back to celebrate Atticus' birthday.  Once again, Brendan loved hanging out with Elizabeth.  (She's about his mobility level.  She doesn't just run off and play like everyone else.)
Brendan had another good day and we are grateful for the improvement he's had the last few days.

  2. What's the point? Could Brendan ever comprehend the impact his life is having on those of us who read his blog every day? I think someday he will be stunned to know that his sweet life and his suffering (and Kerry documenting it all so beautifully) has had a dramatic and positive influence on my life, and my family's life. Thank you!

  3. I couldn't agree more with Kim. Brendan's example and this blog has truly changed my life. It has changed the way I think, treat my children, and my priorities. My testimony has become stronger because of Brendan and your sweet family. Praying everyday for you all.
