So much for a regimented schedule -- I should have known better anyway. Today I was sure it was time to hit school hard and catch up on some school subjects that we have been slacking on. And I figured it was a good time for Brendan to do some physical therapy and work those muscles that haven't gotten the attention they need lately.
But, as the case with life lately, we just can't count on anything for sure. Brendan woke up tired and didn't get out of bed until 9 a.m. Then he just moved to the heater and kept warm there for another couple of hours. Finally, when it was almost time for blood draws, I insisted Brendan get up and into the bath. Since the EMLA cream takes 20-45 minutes to numb the skin, we put the cream on and covered it with the tegaderm tape. It worked! It kept the cream in and the water out. So Brendan was ready when they came to draw blood.
Initial reports from the hospital show that Brendan's blood counts are already dropping. His white blood cell counts are lower and his hematocrit is slightly lower, but his platelets are a little higher. His ANC results had not yet been posted. But they are expected to be lower since his white blood cell counts are dropping. I guess we should have figured it out since Brendan was so tired today.
Tonight the Petersen family came over for Family Home Evening. They know all about life with cancer. What a great family!
Brendan was also nauseous a lot today and didn't feel quite up to eating anything. I am hoping the nausea passes soon and he starts to feel better -- and has a little more energy. Then, maybe, just maybe, we can plan on getting something done.
Healing is hard.
