Brendan had a bad night. Lots of pain at 3 a.m. The nurse was trying to get orders written for more pain medication, but it didn't happen. This morning the team of doctors came in and wrote for pain meds to be administered every hour as needed. With so little sleep for the last few nights, Brendan slept until 11 a.m. He woke up feeling great . . . until he moved his legs. Then he needed some serious pain medication to get it under control.
The only time Brendan got out of bed today was when they brought the scales in to weigh him. He really, really, really did not want to stand. But he did. When the physical therapist came a few minutes later with a walker for him to try out, he begged not to have to get out of bed one more time. She told him she would come back tomorrow. (Brendan's biopsy was taken in the weakest part of the femur so they don't want Brendan to put full weight on it for a week so he doesn't risk a bone fracture.)
The restrictions on Brendan's fluids was lifted after we discussed how his sodium is high and holding steady -- and he doesn't drink a whole lot anyway. So he got all the apple juice he wanted today. (Which equaled about 2/3 cup).
The Bingo prize today was a catapult. Brendan slept through the Bingo game, but got a prize anyway.
It kept him busy for a while until his leg started hurting again.
Test results keep coming in. Dr. Pavia, the head of the Infectious Disease (ID) department came to report that the hip fluid has not "grown" anything. All blood cultures are negative. So far the bone biopsy cultures for bone infections are negative. They still have no idea why Brendan fevered on Monday. Tomorrow, if the cultures are still negative they will take Brendan off of the antibiotics. Pathology results are still pending -- (they have to dissolve the bone from the biopsy in a solution before they can look for cancer cells.) But the orthopedic oncology doctor said that the bone did not look like it had tumor -- and he does this a lot, both here and at Huntsman. He reported to ID also, that the bone was not soft or squishy under the needle (indicating pus and infected bone). It just looked and felt like dying bone.
After the very busy day yesterday, it was nice to just rest. It was very quiet during the afternoon today. Brendan read a book (and finished it), then we watched a movie together while I rubbed his feet.
As the day has gone by, Brendan has had less and less pain (or else it is better managed), and he can move better without causing excruciating pain. As he has felt better, he has been much happier and less irritable.
Tonight he was in great spirits when Susan (the Art Lady) came to help him make another duct tape wallet.
Brendan always feels better when Susan is around. (And check out that knee position -- he hasn't been able to hold his legs up like that for a while now.Shaun, Sarah and Rachel dropped in for a visit and a very, very short game of Monopoly (much to Rachel's relief).
Everything is in "wait-and-see" mode. When Brendan can move around again without a lot of debilitating pain, they will think about sending us home -- even without answers as to why this happened.
Until then, "We'll have our femurs crossed!" -- (What Brendan thought Dr. Mesnarich said to him yesterday when he was headed in for the biopsy of his femur :)

We love you all and are praying for you guys!!!
