The Right Direction

Brendan continues to try new foods every day.   Today it was a cheese sandwich.  More and more foods are tasting good to him.  This is a good sign.  The doctors told us he may never smell again.  Between the surgery that removed his olfactory (smell) nerves, the radiation, and the chemo, nothing has tasted good to him for months.  In a couple of weeks the decision will be made to keep his nasogastric tube in or take it out.  If Brendan keeps increasing his food intake, he will hopefully get to take his tube out for good soon.

Brendan’s physical activity is also increasing every day.  Today he played a little baseball for the first time.  It took him a while to hit the ball, but he finally made the adjustment necessary with having only one eye, and he was then able to hit the ball again.  Throwing the ball is still hurting his chest due to the port.  Hopefully that can come out soon as well.

Dr. Meznarich called today to tell us they are working on getting Brendan scheduled for bone scans and MRI scans to see how he is doing.  Because he seems to be improving every day, we are hopeful that things are moving in the right direction.  The scans should give us a better feel for where he is at in his recovery, and whether there are remaining issues with his bones.

We met with the counselor at Spring Creek Middle School today.  We are hoping Brendan can get back to school soon – at least part time.  He still tires quickly.  It’s getting to the point, however, where he’s getting a little stir crazy at home, and school isn’t near as fun to do alone on the computer.  Spring Creek has been so supportive and helpful and willing to assist us in getting Brendan re-integrated.  We are so grateful for the wonderful teachers and administrative staff there.
Brendan's cousin, Makail, came to visit this afternoon.

Ummm, not sure the scooter is on the approved list of activities yet. . .
