"This is the Night We've Waited For. . ."

"This is the night we've waited for;
Always a treat we have in store!
We love each other more and more
With every family night!"

Remember that old Primary song?  I've not heard it for many years, but I kept thinking it tonight as we had everyone home (except Loren and Jamie, of course) for Family Home Evening.  I love it when everyone is together again -- even the college kids and the married kids.  All together.

Tonight we went swimming.  We don't get to do it very often, but the kids always love it when we do.  Brendan got to swim tonight too.  His first time swimming since before his diagnosis. We just took off his tube extension, sealed it tight, and wrapped the end so no water could get inside.

 I just loved this kid -- he just had to ask Brendan why he had that tube in his nose.  Brendan kindly, lovingly stopped and showed him his tube and explained how food is put into the tube for him to eat and how it goes through his nose and into his stomach.

I love how the kids don't mind staring at Brendan's bald head.  Or look at his feeding tube.  Or ask questions.  They are easily satisfied with the answers and then they understand and it doesn't bother them anymore.  No awkwardness -- no embarrassed glances or looking away.  It's so refreshing.
Brendan loved another day at school.  He's ready to add a 3rd class to his schedule so he is going a "full" half-day of school.  His stamina is great and he even got his lunch card today and ate school lunch.  Cheesy dunkers.  (He said the marinara sauce was too spicy.  He tried the pudding, but pudding still has too many negative associations with his early days in the hospital.  So he only got a few bites of that down.)

 We've waited so long to all be together again.  It's just such a great feeling.  Knowing that it can stay this way for awhile is wonderful.  We're grateful for every day we have.
 Free at last to just be a normal kid!
